Barthes called it a message without a code. Sontag called it a predation dressed as memory. Neither was wrong, and neither was enough. The photograph has always exceeded its theorists — it is evidence and fiction in the same instant, the punctum and the propaganda, the thing that happened and the thing you were told happened. I don't resolve that tension. I intend to find the in-betweens*, a drop in an entire ocean.
