A Room in Sarajevo, In Memory of Paul Lowe
The hardest part of the story is rarely the taking — it's the telling.
The VII Foundation has opened applications for the Paul Lowe Residency, a one-month programme created in memory of the late photographer and educator, designed to give a Ukrainian documentary photographer dedicated time, space, and professional support to edit, sequence, print, and develop an existing body of work for publication and public presentation. The setup is refreshingly unglamorous, in the best way: no shooting brief, no travel grant for new work. Just a month — from November 1 to November 30, 2026, based in Sarajevo — to sit with images already made and figure out what they're actually saying. It's the unsexy, essential part of the job that rarely gets funded: the editing table.

Filipino photographer Geloy Concepcion built one of the more quietly devastating projects on Instagram out of a single, simple prompt: what did you want to say, but never did? Four years ago, new to living in San Francisco and feeling directionless and lonely, Geloy asked social media followers this question on a whim, then paired their responses with his photography — not polished portraits, but the blurry, imperfect outtakes that feel closer to real life. The project has since become a book — Things You Wanted to Say But Never Did, published by Harper Celebrate — part photography collection, part guided journal, with tear-away stationery and writing prompts built around the submissions. Comedian and filmmaker Judd Apatow has called it a capture of "the whole perfect mess" of life.
